Li Shang is one of the important characters in the Mulan cartoon, inspired by a Chinese legend. Li Shang is the son of General Li, and captain of the imperial army of China. As the Huns, led by their leader Shang Yu, invade China, the emperor calls one man from each family to join the army to protect the country. This is how Mulan, the heroine of the cartoon, finds herself in the military camp, disguised as a man to save her father, who is wounded and too old to go into battle. She calls herself Fa Ping and undergoes training by Li Shang with the other new recruits. Li Shang is a Chinese man with dark brown eyes, dark brown skin and medium-long black hair, which he ties into a bun with a red ribbon. Shang is pragmatic and has rather brutal and exhausting training methods. For example, he asks his team to climb a wooden pole to retrieve an arrow from the top. The recruits have to climb with two very heavy gold discs on their wrists. Mulan a.k.a. Ping is the first soldier to successfully complete this exercise, earning the esteem of the other recruits and becoming one of the best elements of the unit. She will make friends such as Yao, Ling and Cheng Po. During an attack in the mountain, Fa Ping points a cannon at the side of the mountain, triggering an avalanche that carries away all the Huns. Li Shang is saved by Mulan, who is himself held by an arrow attached to a cord. During this attack, Mulan is wounded and is treated by the doctor who discovers that she is in fact a woman! Li Shang spares her life because she saved his and leaves Mulan with his army. Later, the Huns invade the palace where the emperor is, Mulan reappears and saves the emperor who gives him a medallion and the sword of Shang Yu to show his gratitude. Li Shang does not dare to reveal his feelings and congratulates Mulan for her fighting skills.
