Jim Hopper is Hawkins' chief of police, used to a routine where crime is non-existent and his job is simply to make an appearance by smoking cigarettes and eating doughnuts. Becoming cynical and emotionally unstable, he endures his life more than he lives it until the day Will Byers mysteriously disappears. Chief Hopper initially believes that Will Byers is simply a runaway child, but this disappearance precedes increasingly strange events and Jim Hopper sees his investigation take on an unexpected scale.Hopper's life is turned upside down when his daughter, barely ten years old, dies of cancer. He loses his wife, who goes off to rebuild her life, drowns in alcohol and isolates herself, no longer enjoying life.
