Winry Rockbell is a childhood friend of the Elric brothers. Unlike them, she never lost her way in the army and preferred the peace and quiet of the small town where she lives. Her daily life is shared with her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell, who taught her the basics of mechanics.Winry lives with her grandmother because she lost her parents when she was very young. They were both surgeons. Because of their medical skills, they had been requisitioned and forcibly mobilized into the army during the bloody episode of the Ishvald civil war. While they were treating a wounded man from the Ishvald tribes, he murdered both of them in a fit of rage. This man was later known as Scar, the terror of the state alchemists.Winry became interested in mechanics partly because her grandmother had made it her profession, but also in order to help Edward Elric. Indeed, after having lost his right arm and his left leg, the latter benefits from automail prostheses. Automail being, in the world of Fullmetal Alchemist, a particular metal known for its solidity and the smoothness of its alloy.Very often, Edward returns to visit Winry to have his automail repaired after it has been destroyed during a fight. The reunion usually takes the form of a series of violent blows from Winry, who is always furious to see how much her work has been reduced to nothing before starting to repair it... As the storylines of Edward and Alphonse unfold, Winry ends up joining them so that she can always be close by to repair the automaton. This involvement with them led her to experience the same setbacks as them. This young girl who only aspired to mechanics and to live a peaceful life found herself embroiled in spite of herself in a dark and bloody epic over which she had no control.
