Gertie is Elliott's little sister in the film E.T. the Alien directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1982. Gertie's family environment is complicated by the fact that her parents are divorced and she lives with her mother and two brothers, which perhaps gives her a somewhat sarcastic personality.Aged 5 in the film, Gertie is frightened by E.T. when Elliott shares her secret with her, uttering a high-pitched scream of fear! But Gertie learns very quickly of her affection for the little alien, especially when she understands that he is sick. She will then actively participate in her brothers' projects to allow ET to return home.Gertie contributes to one of the most touching scenes in the film when she gives her plant to ET as a reminder of her time on Earth and in her family. Dressed in the fashion of the 80s, she is wearing jeans overalls over a yellow long-sleeved t-shirt. On her feet, Gertie has the same shoes as her brother: the white sneakers that were so popular with children at that time.Finally, just like in the movie, Gertie's pop shows her handing the flowerpot to E.T. as he prepares to return to his planet. Gertie knows that E.T. the extra terrestrial can take care of the plants and that he will take care of his pot.
